Company of Sixty Open Shoot - Sunday March 10th 2024

Shoot Report and Results

Our first shoot of the year is always popular and so was fully booked.  However, the dodgy weather forecast did thin the numbers on day, so that only 107 archers turned up to brave the forecasted rain.  Predictably this arrived just as the shoor began and stopped just as the medals were given out.  During the shoot itself, the wet conditions may have dampened the scorecards, but not the levels of competition between archers. The new catering team of Steve and Sue aided by the entire Wetherell Family hit the ground running, to help keep everyone on the go.  Our Creak and Christmas Tree courses provided some contrasting challenges and generated great comments from many of our visitors on the hard work of our course layers.  Our next shoot is Sunday May 19th, where we are hoping for a welcome return of that big bright yellow thing in the sky!

SHOOT REPORT

There was a charity element, with 50% of the shoot fees being donated to The Princes Trust.

A significant number of no-shows and a last-minute injury meant a relatively cosy group of just 56 archers took to the woods on the day.  Our course-layers had been busy and had included a number of predator/prey combinations, plus a fan shot from the top of our container, all of which meant there were plenty of 3D targets to challenge our visitors.  The weather gods smiled on us once more and the day stayed fine and often sunny.  Thanks go to all those who helped make the day a success.

Our next shoot is our December 4th Mince Pie Friendly, when all four of our courses will be available, with some festive-themed targets to get you in the mood for Christmas.  A rolling start, with shooting from around 9.15am onwards should help keen visitors make the most of the shorter December day.

NFAS Prince of Wales Shoot 16th October 2022

This was our last Prince of Wales shoot before the name changes to reflect that our benefactor, Prince Charles, is now King Charles III.  There was a charity element, with 50% of the shoot fees being donated to The Princes Trust.

NFAS BLUEBELL Shoot RESULTS 24th April 2022

Shoot Report

Our bluebells kept their side of the bargain and put on a splendid display for the 93 archers who attended our Bluebell Open shoot.  The weather was fine, with some splendid periods of sunshine.  Scores were generally a little lower than our March shoot, and put down to some deceptive, rather than obviously tricky shots.  “Some targets where further away than I thought,” seemed to be the comment most regularly overheard as archers stopped for catering.  Lorraine, Amie and Roy kept the food flowing, also joined by Brenda.  Thanks go to the hard work of the course layers and a great bunch of marshals who gave up their time on the day.  Our next shoot is our September 11th Friendly, when all four of our courses will be available, along with a rolling start so visitors can please themselves when they come and go.

NFAS Spring Shoot RESULTS 13th March 2022

Shoot Report

The weather largely behaved for our first shoot of the year, where 107 archers tackled the mud and some tricky targets on our newly laid Creek and Christmas Tree courses.  Once again, conditions had seen the course layers’ jobs made more difficult in the days leading up to the shoot, but they had come through with flying colours.  Credit to Lorraine and her catering team of Amie, Maxine and Roy, who kept the hungry archers on the go. Also, special thanks must go to Carol Edwards for the emergency loan of her tea urn, following our technical breakdown, without which the flow of welcoming hot brews would have certainly faltered!

NFAS Prince Of Wales Shoot RESULTS 17th October 2021

SHOOT REPORT

A grey but dry day provided the setting for our first recognizably normal shoot for 19 months.  As it turned out, the new normal looked very much like the old normal, in that a lot of the usual suspects carried away the medals.  A total of 93 visiting archers took on our Savannah and Christmas Tree courses.  The course layers had had a field day (no pun intended) by utilising many of our freshly purchased 3Ds.  The unfamiliarity of these targets seems to have caught quite a few people out.  Savannah, in particular, was unrecognizable to any archers who had shot it at our September Friendly and were perhaps hoping it may have given them some small advantage!  As this was our annual Prince of Wales shoot, we held a raffle in his name, raising £148 for the Prince’s Trust.  Thanks to all the course layers for setting some varied challenges, plus all our helpers on the day who took to their tasks with efficiency and enthusiasm.  Our next shoot At Company of 60 is our popular and fun Mince Pie Friendly on December 5th, when all four of our courses will be again available for archers to shoot.

NFAS Bluebell Shoot RESULTS 25th April 2021

IMG_7259 3.JPG

Shoot Report

Our first open shoot for 15 months was a cautious affair, with a limited number of slots to not fall foul of Covid restrictions and so keep Boris happy. The bright, often sunny day welcomed 65 archers to our woods.  All seemed to cope wonderfully with the staggered and timed starting system that saw groups of 4 beginning every 10 minutes, alternating between our Creek and Bluebell courses.  Visitor numbers may only have been half our usual limit, but those who attended had smiles enough for two, as they happily tried to get to grips with a competitive shoot again after so long being deprived!

Those who started on Creek were immediately faced with a moving target shot from the top of one of our containers.  Fiendishly set up by course layer Martin and manned by his small team of dedicated helpers, as a first target it proved a rude awakening for some very rusty archers!

Our Bluebell course was a little late with its usual carpet of flowers, though it’s doubtful many actually noticed, as they were too busy concentrating on the targets, so as not lose more than their usual compliment of stray arrows.

“Brilliant!”… “Great to be back!”…“I’ve really missed shoots,” seemed to be the most common comments.  So much so, in fact, that the lack of catering did nothing to dampen spirits.  Thanks, as usual, go to all those who worked hard to lay the brilliant courses Phil, Martin A, Martin S, Stefan and anyone else who had a hand in making sure they were ready for the day.  Also special mention goes to our Membership Secretary Sally, for mustering all the splendid marshals and generally multi-tasking on the day.

Club Re-opens for members

Screenshot 2020-05-23 at 17.00.12.png

Hello everyone,

You'll be pleased to hear that the woods will be available again for shooting from 07:00 tomorrow morning. Before you go, please read the attached rules document which details what is required of you should you wish to visit the woods, and make sure you adhere to everything contained within.

Adhering to government guidelines, there is a maximum of two people per group (unless everyone in the group is from the same household). Please maintain social distancing and do not congregate. I hope it goes without saying, but you should not share a car with anyone not from your household whilst going to the woods.

For any of you that are at risk, or are living with someone at risk, I strongly suggest you avoid coming to the woods as you will be increasing your risk of infection.

Note that as per the NFAS, the toilets, hut, and communal seating areas are closed.

Please note that you need to have renewed your membership to be in the woods, and no guests are currently allowed. You also need to take your own hand gel to the woods. Tesco currently have lots of stock of large £1 bottles of anti-bacterial gel, so please make sure you pick some up. When at the woods please remember to display your parking permit and take any rubbish home with you.

All four courses are open. Bluebell has been completely re-laid and has a new set of North American wildlife prints for you to shoot. Christmas Tree and Creek are full 3D courses, and Savannah is set up with photo prints. The courses have been cleared in preparation for re-opening, but be aware that at this time of year the ferns and other undergrowth tend to spring back pretty quickly.

We have a new platform shot on target 1 of Creek - please take care to avoid touching the handrails unless absolutely necessary. Use the hand-gel at the foot of the stairs to clean your hands if you do have to touch anything. Note that there is an alternative peg on the ground for those of you who do not wish to climb the stairs.

Please use common sense and behave responsibly whilst in the woods. Being able to get outdoors and shoot again is fantastic, but the situation in the country is still serious.

Stay safe. Shoot straight.

Enjoy yourselves!

The Debbie Wood-Downer Memorial Open - 15 March 2020

Shoot Report and Results

Our first shoot of the year was one of the biggest ever, attracting 139 archers, as it seemed the world and his wife wanted to get a shoot under their belt before the Corona virus shut the world down.  The great turn-out was welcome, not least because this was a memorial shoot in memory of our much-missed club coach Debbie Wood-Downer, who sadly passed away recently.  As well as a collection on the day, half the shoot fees are being donated to charity, meaning both The British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK will receive over £300 each.

Conditions for archers were challenging, and we’re not even talking about the targets.  The course layers had made full use of what appeared to be strategically placed ready-mixed mud, whilst the wettest February on record delivered some interesting ‘water hazards’ for people to navigate.  Both our Christmas Tree and Savannah courses had a full complement of 3Ds which kept our visitors busy long into the afternoon.  They rewarded us with some truly outstanding scores.  So impressive, that during the medal presentation our Master of Ceremonies, Stefan, doubted people’s maths!  Top marks to the course layers who battled with the weather in the weeks prior to the shoot to set some excellent shots.  Praise also to Lorraine and her catering team of Amie, Claude and Roy, who kept hungry archers on the go.

Winning in France... by Sally Smith

quend. Tir3D. Mars 2020.jpg

As I sit on my front steps at 6am on the day another wet and windy storm is about to cross the UK waiting for two of my fellow companions of this adventure, it occurred to me that this may not be the best weekend to try field archery on the French coast.

The event starts at lunchtime but one of our group (you know who you are) likes to be on the safe side and leave really early to make the channel train, as there may be lots of traffic, on the speed restricted M20. No traffic and forty five minutes later we are at the tunnel and getting an earlier train than the one booked. On the plus side the weather is not looking too bad (light rain) and we have time for a leisurely breakfast/brunch in France. We arrive in Quend a tiny seaside village and like all French villages I have visited over the years it seems completely deserted. Eventually finding a café that is open we struggle to get the car doors open and not get drenched or blown over in the rain and strong winds. The now heavy rain seems to be travelling horizontally. At this point all of us thought this trip was probably not the great idea we once thought it was.

Registration for Team Angleterre (Bruno, Claude, Stefan, Monique and Sally) is in a 1950’s small cinema. We were greeted with lots of smiles and being French hugs and cheek kissing (Ahh!! corona virus). The shoot is only about a five minute walk away but given the weather we drive. In the carpark, which is at the back of the beach, we get our gear on and go to the assembly point where they have set up the practice butts. The first arrow of the weekend gets broken here (Stefan) which sets up the tone for the day.

It is hard to discuss the course in detail because the weather was so bad that all we wanted was to finish and retire to the hotel for a hot bath, dry clothes and a drink or two. It seemed a very long course but that may have had something to do with our mood (miserable) and not the actual distance. A few arrows got broken the result of hitting the solid targets at the wrong angle due to the winds. Obviously not our poor shooting technique.

We were all saying if the weather remained the same we were not going to shoot on the Sunday but the morning greeted us with no rain and the sky even had patches of blue here and there.  After a pleasant breakfast we register in the quaint cinema again and walk to the shoot. We are all hoping our poor scoring on Saturday will not be repeated again.

The course was the same as the previous day 24 targets all 3D’s. No targets had any obstacles between them and the peg and none over 30mts so initially we thought they would be relatively simple. How wrong we were.

The terrain, open sand or on the edge of a pine forest, gave the course layers many chances to mess with our brains, which they did very well. We shot two arrows from the same peg with 22 (inner kill got you 11) being the maximum score that could be achieved. Just hitting the target got you 5 points per arrow. Given you could achieve 240 points if both arrows just hitting each target, it is a measure of the difficulty of the course that the highest score in our group was only around 250. Thanks go to Bruno and Claude for keeping us within the rules as they are somewhat different to NFAS.

Although we thought we scored poorly three of the group got individual medals and we also won the team trophy which meant a photo with the Mayor for the local paper (they take their archery very seriously in France) which was a nice touch. The next shoot there is in November and I highly recommend it as a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

NFAS Open Shoot Results - Prince of Wales Open

The incessant rain of previous days abated to allow 96 archers to enjoy a rain-free day at the Company of 60’s Crown Estate woods.  The name of this annual shoot is in recognition of the key part played by the Prince in securing these wonderful grounds as the home for the club in the late 1980’s. And a right royal day seems to have been enjoyed by all, with both our Christmas Tree and Creek Courses offering a full complement of 3D targets, many of which were newly purchased.  There was much praise from visitors at the variety of shots set by the course layers.  Special thanks go to Freda, Sylvia, Stefan, Martin, Roy, Phil and Mark for their work on the courses.  Lorraine and her catering team kept the food going, and praise also goes to Ian, our Publicity Officer, whose excellent video piece from the day features many visitors sharing the secrets of their chosen archery equipment (go to our Facebook page to see this!).  Our next Shoot is our Mince Pie Friendly on December 8th, which will have a rolling start, full catering and all our four courses of 20 targets each for you to enjoy.

Bluebell Shoot Report and Results

IMG_E1462.JPG

May 28th 2019

Our Bluebell woods were in full splendour for our April Open shoot, attracting 106 archers on the day.  Thankfully the winds of Storm Hannah had abated overnight, to make shooting more comfortable.  On our Savannah course, the ingeniously rigged moving bear caused much discussion, as did the much-blanked caiman alligator on our Bluebell course, that used its camouflage to good effect, lurking almost unnoticed on our over-the-pond shot. Thanks go to Stefan and Phil for their challenging courses.  In the catering hut, new members Nadine and Amy proved invaluable additions to our regular team of Lorrain and Roy to keep everyone happy.  Our next Shoot is our September 8th Friendly, which will have a rolling start and full catering and all four courses for you to enjoy.
